Motion Musical
Does anyone know the name of the movie from the late 80′s early 90′s that had the song the Loco-Motion?

It had a Lady that took a group of kids on a trip. it was kind of like the magic school bus. It was a musical kind of movie.

David McGill has assembled an exhaustive study that uses the musical concepts of the legendary Marcel Tabuteau as a starting point from which to develop musical thought. McGill methodically explains the frequently misunderstood "Tabuteau number system" and its relationship to note grouping-the lifeblood of music. The controversial issue of baroque performance practice is also addressed. Instrumentalists and vocalists alike will find that many of the ideas presented in this book will help develop their musicianship as well as their understanding of what makes a performance "musical."

Amrit Sond’s debut album is 11 tracks’ worth of reflective solo acoustic guitar music that recalls the early days of the Windham Hill label. Before “new age” was a musical genre, the Windham Hill artists were a group of musical oddballs making records that fit in no ready-made slot, and Circular Motion has that same sense of being lost in time and space: this is a record that could have been recorded at any point in the last three decades. Neither as rootsy as John Fahey or as quirkily experimental as the Durutti Column, but containing elements of both, these songs range from surprisingly driving (the compelling opener, “Vertical Time,” which maintains a remarkable sense of forward velocity) to more typically serene (the lyrical, spacy “Reaching Out [For Gravity]“), maintaining enough variety and diversity within the necessarily limited musical palette that the album rarely becomes merely a pleasant background wash. This is a surprising and entertaining debut. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi Performers: Amrit Sond – E-Bow, Guitar, Guitar (Acoustic)

Music in Motion

Considering it is only his second recording as leader, Jason Marsalis exhibits an uncommonly resolute assurance on Music in Motion. If his debut album heralded an exciting new voice in jazz, then its follow-up introduces a musician already in full command of his compositional and instrumental powers. The album is not only a confident statement (although it is certainly that, as Marsalis wrote all the compositions and produced the album himself), it is a recording that sets the bar high, and frequently succeeds at clearing it, putting forth a goal of expanding jazz’s rhythmic palette and then finding a unifying principle with which to do so. Marsalis constructed the recording to accent motion, and he wrote all the tunes with rhythm in mind, to showcase the rhythmic possibilities of all the instruments, particularly the saxophone interplay of tenor John Ellis and alto/soprano Derek Douget, one of two holdovers from the first album. The duo perfectly complements one another, trading off wonderful playing on songs such as “There’s a Thing Called Rhythm,” with its multiple time changes, and the Brazilian-influenced “Maracatu de Modernizar.” Marsalis also proves himself in exceptional form, emulating seminal influence Jeff “Tain” Watts on the rousing tribute to his brother Branford, “The Steepistician,” and making a song out of the scintillating overdubbing exercise “Discipline Strikes Again,” an extension of the previous album’s percussion experiment, “Discipline.” Improvisation plays a more central role on the album than on the previous one, and the band is more than up to the challenge. The unit perhaps experiments a bit less wildly than on the debut, but they are just as adventurous and draw on stylistic influences that are just as diverse. On “It Came from the Planet Nebtoon,” they cast a bit of a free jazz spell, while “Seven-Ay Pocky Way” injects some welcome Meters-style funk into the equation, and it points to the true progression of Music in Motion. In his liner notes, Marsalis describes his vantage point: “If jazz is to keep moving forward, all of the musical styles in jazz history have to be advanced while including musical styles out of the jazz realm.” Music in Motion is a fabulous first step toward that ideal. ~ Stanton Swihart, Rovi Performers: Derek Douget – Sax (Soprano), Sax (Alto); Jason Marsalis – Percussion, Drums; John Ellis – Sax (Tenor); Jonathan Lefcoski – Piano; Peter Harris – Bass

Man in Motion

Man in Motion

$19.98

Warren Haynes has been almost ubiquitous since he joined the Allman Brothers Band, and formed Gov’t Mule with Allen Woody and Matt Abts. He’s played and collaborated with everyone from the Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan to Little Milton and Taj Mahal. Fans might be surprised to learn that Southern soul was an early love. But they shouldn’t be. Man in Motion is Haynes’ first conscious effort and to fully indulge his love for this music, and his first solo record with backing musicians since 1993. Co-produced with Gordie Johnson, Man in Motion boasts a stellar cast: George Porter, Jr. on bass, Ivan Neville on organ, clavinet, and backing vocals, Ian McLagan on Wurlitzer and piano, drummer Raymond Weber, tenor saxophonist Ron Holloway, and backing vocalist Ruthie Foster. Two surprises do occur on the title track that opens this set: how much Haynes has grown as a songwriter and as a singer. (He may argue, but it sounds like he’s been influenced by Gregg Allman’s phrasing and delivery; here he moves toward the groove in his lyrics, he doesn’t try to shout them above it.) The track is tight; rhythmically pulsed lines in the verses give way to fills and swells by the band that resolve in the choruses. They funk it greasy à la the MG’s, backed by a horn section (courtesy of the Grooveline Horns). Haynes lets his guitar talk, too, adding an edgy, raw heat in his solo to close it. The blues are evident in everything Haynes plays here, and he plays plenty. On “River’s Gonna Rise,” a gospel vamp leads into an easy, dark-tinged funkiness. Haynes’ singing is as emotive as it is tough; he lets his guitar engage freely with both keyboardists, trading fills. Foster and Neville are excellent backing foils. This is only the beginning of the many delights here. Check the nasty, tightrope-walking Meters-like funk on “Sick of My Shadow”; the blues-drenched strut in “On a Real Lonely Night” (with its killer keyboard interplay); the soaring emotion of Holloway’s sax dueling for dominance with Haynes’ vocal on “In Your Wildest Dreams” and “A Friend to You”; and Haynes’ greasy urgency in the Wilson Pickett-flavored “Take a Bullet.” Man in Motion’s lone cover, a reading of William Bell’s and Booker T. Jones’ ballad, “Everyday Will Be a Holiday,” showcases Haynes’ voice and guitar as the foundations of a deeply emotional palette the band paints upon. Man in Motion is a record that adds a new subtitle to Haynes’ musical portrait: that of a soul man. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi

Motion Sickness

Motion Sickness

$11.18

Although it may be difficult to document the path of Bright Eyes in 15 songs, Motion Sickness, which is culled from the winter 2005 tour following the release of I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning (which also coincided with the release of Digital Ash in a Digital Urn, ignored here), does a good job of not only capturing the band’s sound, but also of the place of Conor Oberst in the modern musical landscape; he is the 21st century’s Bob Dylan, its troubadourian hero. If he is aware of this (and he certainly must be), he doesn’t let on too much, focusing on his words and performance instead of his status and his image. By this point in his career, Oberst’s voice has lost some of the extreme quaver that marked his reflective, descriptive lyrics with both a fragility and an arrogance not usually seen outside of precocious, sheltered teenagers. He sounds surer of himself, with a confidence that comes not from reading overly glowing critical reviews but from experience, both in art and life. And the band here, for the most part, is tight and in control, comfortable with the repertoire and the easy country-rock feel that the songs take. It’s a good set, running through much of I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning but also touching upon Lifted (including a great rendition of “Method Acting”), Fevers and Mirrors (the pedal-steeled “Scale,” aka “A Scale, a Mirror and Those Indifferent Clocks”), as well as a couple of B-sides (“True Blue” and the now famed “When the President Talks to God”) and covers (Elliott Smith’s “The Biggest Lie” and Feist’s “Mushaboom,” which, as the liner notes by touring drummer Jason Boesel reveal, was learned quickly on the tour, and honestly, sounds it, Oberst singing in an uncomfortable key and in uncomfortable tones, unrehearsed and a little off), not a greatest-hits collection but a strong selection of mature, intelligent songs, completely representative of what Bright Eyes has become. ~ Marisa Brown, Rovi Performers: Jesse Harris – Guitar

Perpetual Motion

Perpetual Motion

$15.99

French metal outfit the Old Dead Tree are a peculiar blend of progressive rock concepts, death metal dynamics and surprisingly pop-oriented tunes. The song titles posit the tunes as an introduction (the metalcore growler “Out of Breath”) followed by three song cycles of interconnected tunes collectively known as “The Lost Boy,” “Down” and “The Sad Fairytale.” The story lines, if any, are obscure enough to be safely ignored in favor of paying closer attention to how the quartet blend the instrumental attack of European black metal to Manuel Munoz’s unaccented and oddly sweet-toned emo-kid vocal styles. (Even at those points where Munoz affects a death metal growl, he sounds like an enthusiastic teenager aping his heroes.) The results are too melodic and pop-oriented to qualify as screamo, but the musical assault may be slightly too hardcore to appeal to the average Hot Topic shopper. For anyone finding themselves somewhere in the middle between Hawthorne Heights and Children of Bodom, however, Perpetual Motion is an unexpectedly good time. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi Performers: Foued Moukid – Drums; Manuel Munoz – Vocals, Guitar; Nicolas Chevrollier – Guitar; Sebastien Latour – Keyboards; Vincent Danhier – Bass

“Retro” and “electronica” seem rather oxymoronic in combination — if any musical genre could be considered forward-looking and futuristic, it would be electronica, whose artists are driven by the latest technological innovations and seem generally unconcerned about “maintaining the tradition.” And yet at the end of the new millennium’s first decade, Radio Massacre International have been luxuriating in the kind of spacy sounds that first hit the airwaves back in the mid-‘70s — think Phaedra, Tangerine Dream’s groundbreaking Virgin Records debut released in 1974. This trio of Brits — Steve Dinsdale (electronics, drums), Duncan Goddard (electronics, bass), and Gary Houghton (guitar, electronics) — has released a gazillion albums since 1995’s Frozen North on the Centaur imprint; Cuneiform nabbed them in 2005, issuing the two-CD set Emissaries that year, followed by the Syd Barrett homage Rain Falls in Grey in 2007. Time & Motion, another Cuneiform two-disc opus, arrived in January 2010, so set the controls for deep space and, harking back to the old sequencer-driven synth music of the Berlin school, prepare for both forward rush and floating ambience over the more than two-and-a-half-hour journey. The opening 17-plus-minute “Kairos” begins with electronic raga-flavored washes and drones with guest Martin Archer’s saxophone adding a Didier Malherbe flavor as the band tunes into a Radio Gnome frequency — it’s no surprise that Daevid Allen handled the Gong-ish cover art on Rain Falls in Grey. But then spaceship RMI kicks up the deep sequencer rhythm underneath it all, and the band is heading full-throttle to parts unknown. After a brief stop in harmonically unsettled, rhythmically free, and even painfully squealy territory, the deep repetitive rhythms kick in again beneath a Froese-like guitar and showers of sparkling sonic pinpoints, the aural equivalent of star-filled galaxies indeed. Archer’s lovely soprano humanizes “The Clockwork Time Dragon,” turning the midtempo synth pulse into true space jazz before deep dark ambience turns the interstellar dream into a nightmare. “Fission Ships, Pt. 1” might be the most “advanced” music on disc one — rhythmically free but often too eventful and ever-unfolding to be deemed ambient music, dark or otherwise. Also drawing from the avant side of electronica is the 24-plus-minute ominously rumbling “Fission Ships, Pt. 2” on disc two; also sans rhythm but far more diffuse and truly ambient, it could easily slip into the background for those not given to deep listening. This side of Time & Motion would be perfect as accompaniment for some zero-gravity housework, perhaps vacuum cleaning in a vacuum. “Aeon,” back on disc one, adds another ten-plus minutes of somewhat similar stuff, while the following multi-layered “Chronos” is positively punchy by comparison, interlocking rhythms developing a nice groove for a slo-mo dance party on an alien sphere. “A Last Look at Joe’s House,” the kickoff to the second disc, pl

The rhythm team of bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Akira Tana has long been among the most in-demand and prolific in jazz. Their collaboration in this group reflects shared musical values and expertise. The group emphasizes collective interplay as much, if not more, than solo prowess, and neither Reid nor Tana dominates the spotlight. The two-horn front line includes tenor/soprano saxophonist Dan Faulk and alto saxophonist/flutist Craig Bailey; they’re solid, often exciting players who shy away from cliches and craft thorough, exacting statements. As you’d expect, Reid and Tana handle rhythm section duties smoothly, from backing and driving the ensemble to taking concise, delightful solos when necessary. Highly professional, capably executed jazz. ~ Ron Wynn, Rovi Performers: Akira Tana – Drums; Craig Bailey – Flute, Sax (Alto); Dan Faulk – Sax (Soprano), Sax (Tenor); Frank Colon – Percussion; Rob Schneiderman – Piano; Rufus Reid – Bass

The Practice of Performance: Studies in Musical Interpretation

$69.98

The twelve essays in this volume reflect the most important trends in the study of musical performance. Three areas are investigated: the psychology of performance, the semantics of performance, and the relation between performance and analysis. The first section broaches fundamental issues such as text, expression, musical motion and the role of practice in the acquisition of expertise. The next four chapters address the shaping of structure and the projection of meaning in performance, while the last four consider performance as analytical paradigm, as dramatic narrative, as act of criticism, as temporal process. Among the distinguished international authorship are many accomplished performers whose practical experience ensures that the book contains vital and stimulating insights into the interpretation of music, and that it will speak to a wide musical audience.

Life in Cartoon Motion

Life in Cartoon Motion

$12.79

Mika’s vivid, aptly named debut album, Life in Cartoon Motion, borrows and builds on the glittery, glamorous, and not-so-secretly sentimental musical territory carved out by Elton John and Freddie Mercury, or more recently, Rufus Wainwright and the Scissor Sisters. Fortunately, his name-dropping, shape-shifting pop is usually good, and genuine, enough to come across as eloquent homage rather than blatant thievery or a tired rehash. Mika’s singles are his most charming moments, especially the instant sunshine of “Grace Kelly,” which crams tap-dancing rhythms, filmic dialogue, Elton’s pianos, Freddie’s vocal harmonies, and Brian May’s guitars into just over three minutes. “Relax (Take It Easy)” is in the same vein of hypnotic, danceable melancholy as the Scissor Sisters’ reworking of “Comfortably Numb,” albeit less showy, while “Billy Brown”‘s brass arrangement, flowing melody, and soft-shoe rhythms give it the feel of an unusually witty show tune about pre-life crises and living in the closet. As Life in Cartoon Motion unfolds, it reveals more of Mika’s musical identity, both for better and worse. His classical piano training gives the album an appealing fluidity, especially on “Any Other World,” and lilting, Afro-pop-inspired guitars and harmonies pop up here and there, most effectively on “Big Girl (You Are Beautiful).” However, while Life in Cartoon Motion has lots of enthusiasm and creativity, it doesn’t have a lot of nuance. On songs like “Lollipop” and “Love Today,” Mika straddles the line between adorable and annoying. And as the overly long, overwrought “Erase” shows, he also doesn’t have quite the masterful touch with gentler songs that his influences possess. As admirable as Life in Cartoon Motion’s eclecticism is, it could use more focus — something that songs like the jaunty breakup song “Stuck in the Middle” and angry rocker “Ring Ring” suggest Mika is developing. While more restraint could’ve taken the album from good to great, its Technicolor, everything-at-once, borderline overdone feel makes it a fitting portrait of Mika as a young artist. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi Performers: Larry Corbett – Cello; Lee Thornburg – Horn; Dan Rothchild – Bass; Jodi Marr – Percussion; Lyle Workman – Guitar; Matt Chamberlain – Drums; Tim Pierce – Guitar

Beat of Metal Motion

Beat of Metal Motion

$29.59

Japan’s Bow Wow initiated their bid for occidental crossover with three simple steps. First, they drafted a new singer, Genki Hitomi, with better English-language skills than founding frontman Mitsuhiro Saito; second, they renamed themselves Vow Wow to avoid confusion with Malcolm McLaren’s new wave confection, Bow Wow Wow; and, three, they polished down their heavy metal rough spots to achieve a more palatable, but oddly hybridized musical approach. These alterations were first profiled on 1984′s oddly named Beat of Metal Motion, which elicited understandably mixed reactions from their loyal fans due to its abundant use of synthesizers (courtesy of the very talented Rei Atsumi) and choired vocals reminiscent of Queen. At times, these novel elements actually worked, as in the stop-start “Break Down,” the tightly wound “Feel Alright,” and the infectious “Too Late to Turn Back,” which saw brilliant guitarist Kyoji Yamamoto riffing aggressively (indeed, his performance is as flamboyantly stunning as ever throughout) before conceding the floor to an equally flashy keyboard solo. But more often than not, things went decidedly pear-shaped, particularly on the ‘80s Rainbow carbon copy of “Mask of Flesh (Masquerade),” the tepidly anthemic “Rock Me Now,” the saccharine ballad “Sleeping in a Dream House,” and “Diamond Night,” which curiously borrowed its bubbling synth program directly from Duran Duran’s “Rio.” By and large, the latter tracks weren’t really at all bad, just way too disconcerting for easy processing by listeners who couldn’t tell whether Vow Wow were wayward hard rockers (“Baby it’s Alright” actually rips off Gary Moore’s “End of the World” in no uncertain terms) or the heaviest New Romantics they’d ever heard. Damn those exotic Japanese! In any case, Beat of Metal Motion wasn’t able deliver the grand entrance that Bow Wow had hoped for, so the hard-working group immediately set to work on their next attempt, 1985′s Cyclone. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi
