Learning the Basic Pottery Skills to Create Classy Handmade Pottery Items by Robin Brain
Despite using the best materials, spending a good sum, and putting up huge efforts, the end product may still not be the best as you desired it to be. Reason is that the potter taking up the work is not skilled enough. It is true, handmade pottery works needs quite a good deal of skill and expertise. It is not the easiest of the tasks to throw the clay at the wheels with perfection and precision to create the best of pottery items even such as the plates.
Learning the Foundations
Pottery skills of any potter can greatly enhance if he learns about at least the three fundamentals that would be the pillars of strength for the potter. These three fundamentals are practice, experience, and above all; experiments. Clay can be used to create intricate and magical results but at the same time one needs deft and skilled hands to accomplish the task. It is continuous practice and gaining of experience that can refine the skills and at the same time experiments can create avenues for innovative designs.
Practice for Perfection
Clay is so soft that it seems creating something with it, even complex items like utensil jars, or kitchen ware could seem easy task to accomplish. Once a person is in the job he or she will certainly realize that the task is not as easy as it seems to be and may easily get disillusioned. It needs a lot of practice to realize the real characteristics of clay and glazes. Practice makes one perfect and it is through regular practice that the prospective potter can turn into a real one. With regular practice, one would become more and more comfortable in the process and will be able to create more and more artistic items in the process.
Value of Experience Cannot be Undermined
Like practice, the value of experience cannot be undermined either. Especially when someone is in the process of creating hand painted pottery items that would be used for decorative purposes in any home, it is necessary that the potter is experienced enough to create the right item befitting the environment around.
Experimentation for Innovative Ideas
It is through experimentation that a potter can have innovative ideas like converting ordinary and traditional items like ordinary jars and plates in to decorative jars and decorative plates for decorating homes.
It is balanced combinations of the three that can help the potter create the best items possible.

Cottages by the Sea: The Handmade Homes of Carmel, America’s First Artist Community $34.03 Carmel, California, has always been a community of artists, writers, and freethinkers. During the early part of its rich history, the area was home to Robinson Jeffers, Mary Austin, Ansel Adams, Charles Greene, Jack London, George Sterling, Upton Sinclair, and Henry Miller, among other great artists of the twentieth century. During the late 1980s, actor Clint Eastwood, a longtime resident, served as mayor. While much about Carmel has changed since the days when Robinson Jeffers could be seen strolling the beach, the area remains one of America’s most beautiful. It is also home to many of America’s most charming but rarely seen cottages. In Carmel’s residential district– a very private, heavily wooded area surrounding the shops and tourist attractions of the town’s often busy main street– there are no sidewalks or streetlights. The U.S. Postal Service does not offer mail delivery. Homes have no addresses; they are simply known by name. Here, it is not uncommon for tourists, so intrigued by the uniqueness of the local architecture, to climb the fences of private homes in order to get a closer look or snapshot of the house on the other side. Now, for the first time, 34 of these homes can be seen more advantageously, in more than 270 specially commissioned and archival exterior and interior photographs. |

Artists’ Handmade Houses $42.33 "Artists’ Handmade Houses" is a collection of 13 homes handcrafted by the finest artists and craftsmen in America, including George Nakashima, Henry Varnum Poor, Sam Maloof, Wharton Esherick, and Russel Wright. Built over the course of 75 years, from the late-19th century to the mid-20th century, these homes were each designed and built by the artists as an expression of their aesthetic sentiments, and in many cases, as extensions of their artwork. As such, these private domains are utterly unique and deeply imbued with each artist’s singular vision and talent. A few of the homes have been awarded National Historic Landmark status, and several are open to the public, while still others have sadly fallen into disrepair or are now in the hands of new owners. In a few cases, the photographs in this book represent the last record of the house as created by its artist resident. |

Handmade St. Fiacre Statue $36.95 Patron of Gardeners Fiacre was born in County Kilkenny, Ireland, in the seventh century. After being ordained a priest, he established a hermitage in Ireland. Word of his holiness spread, and disciples came to him. He fled to France, looking for greater solitude. There, the bishop of Meaux offered him use of all the land he could till in one day. Fiacre miraculously used his staff to turn over acres of land, which the bishop granted to him. He built a hermitage with a substantial garden. He lived a life of great mortification and hard manual labor, tending the garden, growing fruits, vegetables, and medicinal herbs. From his garden he fed pilgrims and the poor. Handmade and painted by an American artist in Mississippi and made to hang only. Can be placed indoors or outdoors. Comes gift boxed with a history card inside. 9 x 3 x 1 inches |

Handmade St. Monica in Niche $47.95 Patron of Mothers of Difficult Children Monica is the patron of mothers of difficult children because she was the mother of St. Augustine. Although Augustine was one of the most influential thinkers in all of Christian history, he devoted much of his early life to sensuality: he, for instance, lived for years with a woman out of wedlock and had a child by her. Throughout the years of her son’s experiments with pleasure and non-Christian religions, Monica, a devout Catholic, patiently and persistently poured out a string of prayers and tears. Soon after Augustine converted to Christianity in 387, Monica–knowing the prayers for her wayward son had been answered–died in his presence. After her death, Augustine wrote of her: “This was the mother, now dead and hidden awhile from my sight, who had wept over me for many years so that I might live.” In this small image of Monica she is shown holding a cup, the cup of tears she wept for her son, now a saint like her. Handmade by American artist Hank Schlau and hand painted by his wife Karen Schlau. Measures 7x3x1 inches to be hung or stand. Made from sustainable architectural material for indoor or outdoor use. |

Adventures in Bookbinding: Handcrafting Mixed-Media Books $24.99 Each project in this book combines bookbinding with a specific craft such as quilting, jewelry making, or polymer clay, and offer levels of expertise: basic, novice, and expert.  Illustrated step-by-step instructions and photographs demonstrate how to construct the cover pages, and a unique binding technique, easy enough for a beginner to master. Each project also features two other versions with the same binding geared to those with more or less experience.  The novice version is for those who have no knowledge of the craft and want shortcuts, but love the look.  For the quilter’s book, for example, vintage quilt pieces become the covers so all that’s needing in the binding.  Or if you’re interested in wool felting use an old sweater.  This offers great opportunities for upcycling. The expert version is for those who have a great deal of knowledge and proficiency of a certain craft – the master art quilter, for example.  For this version, an expert guest artist has created the cover and the author has created the binding.  This offers yet another creative opportunity – the collaborative project.  Since crafters often get involved with round-robins and other shared endeavors, this will show them yet another way to combine their skills. No other craft book offers the possibilities and challenges that Adventures in Bookbinding does.  Readers will return to it again and again to find inspiration and ideas.Jeannine Stein has been making books for more than fifteen years, exploring bindings, mediums, and techniques. In addition to teaching book-binding, she is an award-winning journalist, and she has written extensively about paper crafts-artists’ books, scrapbooking, rubber stamping, and letterpress. She is the author of Re-Bound: Creating Handmade Books with Recycled and Repurposed Materials, (Quarry Books, 2009).  |

Anatomy of Sorrow $35 Anatomy Of Sorrow is the latest monograph by prolific and influential artist Daniel Martin Diaz, which explores a new depth of symbolism, mysticism and surreal iconography depicted in paintings, drawings, and prints. Drawing from old masters Jan van Eyck, Pieter Bruegel, and Hieronymus Bosch, both in subject matter and in the ancient egg tempera and resin oil painting technique, the works of self-taught artist and classically trained composer Daniel Martin D az possess a sincerity that foregrounds his deep devotion to revealing a higher meaning through painstaking craftsmanship. Through his application of a limited palette on distressed wood, his handmade wooden frames, and his expressive use of Latin text, D az”s images thrust us into another time and place. |

The difference in height is not exaggerated. Frida was dwarfed by her larger than life husband. Art of Richard Tuttle $28.98 In conjunction with a forthcoming traveling retrospective of Richard Tuttle’s work, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has produced this major catalogue—the definitive publication on the artist and a lasting contribution to the art-historical field. Featuring more than 260 beautiful reproductions, this book offers an extensive visual record of Tuttle’s artwork and creative process. Presented here are full-sized plates of the works in the exhibition, documentary images of the artist’s working methods and previous installations, a complete exhibition history, and an authoritative bibliography. The catalogue addresses the far-reaching implications of Tuttle’s creative output for contemporary art, and examines his complicated relationship to Postminimalism, the movement with which he is commonly identified. An essay by exhibition curator Madeleine Grynsztejn traces the trajectory of Tuttle’s 40-year career. Cornelia H. Butler discusses Tuttle’s expanded notion of drawing and the role of line within his oeuvre, while Richard Shiff focuses on Tuttle’s “handmade abstraction” and diverse historical precedents for his artistic practice. Robert Storr situates Tuttle’s work and its critical reception vis-à-vis the various currents of Postminimalism in Europe and America, and Katy Siegel explores the multifaceted relationship of Tuttle’s art to written language, examining the artist’s numerous collaborations with poets, and the ways in which shapes of individual typographical characters inform his personal vocabulary of glyph-like forms. Finally, Tara McDowell, Elizabeth A.T. Smith, Adam D. Weinberg and Charles Wylie contribute “case studies” that address, respectively, thesubtle interplay between Tuttle’s frames and his drawings, his distinctive furniture designs, his controversial 1975 exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, and his first museum show in 1971. Edited by Madeleine Grynsztejn. Essays by Cornelia Butler, Richard Shiff, Katy Siegel, |
