A very large bear by Zack Tappan
A very large bear named Lop Ear AKA Woundwort (after the big mean bunny in Watership Down) or Van Gogh is still the biggest and the baddest boar in the bay. He is big and tough and he knows it. There is a few large boar bears that live in Hallo bay, Lop ear isn’t the very largest of them all but he is the toughest and the meanest.
For a lot of years he was just the undisputed champion of the bay. He got the prettiest girls, the best fishing holes, walked where he wanted, slept where he wanted etc. There was only one bear in the bay which could stand up to him, scar face, a much younger but very large boar. And as you can tell by his name he had been in more than one fight. We never saw the two fight because they ignore each other completely, neither one wanting to tangle with the other and neither one willing to suffer the indignity of wimping out of a fight. The best strategy for each was to pretend that the other did not exist.
But over the last few years as a couple of other younger bears gain size and strength we suspect that Lop Ear has started to feel his dominance threatened. His answer is simple: They may be getting bigger but they are not meaner. He got mean, just plain mean. Even the old standoff between him and scar face was broken. And Scar face wanted nothing to do with him. Nobody did except for some of the mature sows who found it cute. But even they were uneasy around him.
Lot of boars limped around the meadow last summer with injuries inflicted by him and when he would walk into a meadow he walked straight in to the middle swaying from side to side with a macho bear stride. All of the other bears would fan out in the best direction away from him. Of course Lop Ear suffered a few injuries himself but he wore them with pride and never let them slow him down a bit. Too tough and too mean to let 3 inch fang sunk into his muscle faze him. And we certainly gave him a very wide berth on our tours. Worrying about a few humans is way beneath him of course; he only cares about other bears. But we were careful to stay well out of his way just the same.
As the spring turned to summer the mating season slowed down and the hormone levels dropped he mellowed out like the rest of the other bears and he slept. He slept a lot.
